Villa Majlis Design in Abu Dhabi: A Practical Guide
The majlis is the room your guests remember. It is where families gather, where visitors are welcomed, and where a villa shows its character. Because it carries so much weight, it is also the room where small planning mistakes are felt the most: seating that does not fit the guests, lighting that is too harsh at night, or air-conditioning that blows straight onto people.
Here is how we approach majlis design for villas in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, step by step.

1. Start with how the majlis will be used
Before choosing any colours or furniture, we ask a few simple questions:
How many guests do you usually host, and how many on big occasions like Eid?
Is this a men's majlis, a women's majlis, or a family majlis?
Will guests enter directly from outside, or through the main house?
Do you serve food in the majlis, or only coffee, tea and dates?
The answers decide the layout. A majlis that receives guests from outside needs its own entrance and, ideally, its own washroom, so visitors never have to pass through private areas of the home.
2. Plan the seating around the room, not in the middle
Traditional majlis seating runs along the walls so everyone can see each other and talk easily. Modern villas often mix this with sofas and armchairs. Whichever style you choose, keep these points in mind:
Leave clear walking space in front of the seats so coffee can be served comfortably.
Choose a comfortable seat depth and firm cushions. Guests may sit for hours.
Place the main seat facing the entrance, so the host can see and greet guests as they arrive.
Keep side tables within reach of every seat for cups and dates.
3. Layer the lighting
One bright ceiling light makes a majlis feel like an office. We design lighting in layers:
Ambient light: concealed lines in the ceiling or cornice for a soft, even glow.
Feature light: a chandelier or pendant that becomes the centrepiece of the room.
Accent light: wall washers that highlight panelling, calligraphy or textured walls.
Putting each layer on its own switch or dimmer lets you change the mood from a bright afternoon gathering to a calm evening.

4. Choose materials that age well
A majlis is used constantly, so finishes must be both beautiful and practical. Wall panelling in wood or fabric absorbs echo and adds warmth. Durable, stain-resistant upholstery fabrics are worth the investment. For floors, large-format porcelain or marble with a quality rug works well and is easy to clean.
5. Don't forget air-conditioning and acoustics
In the UAE climate, air-conditioning is not an afterthought. Diffusers should be placed so cool air does not blow directly onto seated guests, and linear slot diffusers can be hidden in the ceiling design. A large majlis with hard surfaces can echo, so curtains, rugs and panelling help keep conversations comfortable.
6. See it in 3D before anything is built
Every majlis we design is modelled in 3D first. You see the layout, colours, lighting and furniture from real viewpoints and can request changes before a single tile is laid. This is the easiest way to avoid expensive changes on site.
